Summary

  • POSITION INFORMATION
    • Position summary:
      • Responsible for assigning the correct ICD10CM and ICD10PCS codes to inpatient cases. Communicates with physicians, clinicians and other hospital staff regarding clinical documentation requirements for accurate MS-DRG, DRG and ICD10 code assignments. Initiates direct follow up with physicians on documentation in the medical record to clarify diagnoses. Participates in hospital committees, task groups, and projects to clarify the processes and guidelines pertaining to DRG and/or code assignments. Works directly with the CDI (Clinical Documentation Improvement) team regarding chart documentation and hospital initiatives. Responds to Payor DRG reassignments and coding audits by writing appeal letter(s) to support original code assignments. Knowledgeable of coding principles, hospital policies and regulatory changes related to coding. These codes and/or DRGs are used to bill the patient for services to ensure optimum reimbursement for services rendered.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    • Education:
      • Registered Health Information Administrator, Registered Health Information Technician or a Certified Coding Specialist with at least an Associate Degree.
      • Extensive knowledge of MS-DRGs, DRG Assurance (Clinical Documentation) Programs, ICD-10, and modifier usage, as required.
      • Extensive knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology required.

    • Required length and type of experience:
      • A minimum of three years’ experience in hospital inpatient coding required.
      • Experience in hospital clinical documentation program required.
      • Excellent computer skills and experience with computerized coding software required.

    • Required licensure, certification or registry:
      • Registered Health Information Administrator or Registered Health Information Technician and Certified Coding Specialist (or within 1 year of date of hire).
      • Must maintain certification/registration status by completing continuing education units.
